MARIA log February 17 Day 149 Saturday

Saturday, February 17 day 149

More rain over night.

(NOW: water rationing starts on Friday because of the lack of rain.)

Eric "Eddie" Perez brought his digger (front-end loader) to clear the fence line on the west side of the property. This will make easier, in fact will make it possible for us to put in a new fence. It cost us $80.The guy is a master, a genius, a magician with the backhoe.

Back in October, our friend Linda posted a comment on our blog:

"I am overcome. I cannot fathom what you, John, and Elaine are experiencing and continue to experience. I know you are filling in your blog from the journal you've kept handwritten since the hurricane hit, one day at a time. You told me in a handwritten letter it took nearly a month to get that your "device"; is jury rigged and powered from your truck battery. I read each new entry with increasing incredulity and anger... at a thoughtless world and at my thoughtless self. We are here in Michigan, safe and sound with water and power and heat and every meal taken for granted. What can we do for you? That is the only issue: what can we do?"

This has truly been and experience. It has been - and continues to be - a lesson in civics, in politics, greed, selfishness, self-aggrandizement, inter- and intra-governmental , and inter-/intra-departmental bickering, bureaucratic bullshit, and first-world arrogance on the part of many of those sent here to help, and first-world expectations on the part of both gringos and boriqueas.

On the micro person level, it has been a total experience of giving and caring and sharing and helping each other.  So many people, both on and off the island have done and given so much to help.
